ACUPUNCTURE AND ELECTRO-STIMULATION

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body. It operates on the principle that stimulating these points can help restore the balance of energy flow, known as Qi, in the body.

From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture works by stimulating sensory nerves, which send signals to the brain and spinal cord to release endorphins and other neurochemicals, regulate pain-processing pathways, influence the autonomic nervous system, improve blood flow to injured tissues, and promote anti-inflammatory and tissue-repair  mechanisms, and provide direct soft tissue modulation that helps reduce muscle tension, deactivate trigger points, and improve local tissue mobility.

This therapy has shown effectiveness in addressing various conditions, including chronic pain, migraines, anxiety, insomnia, digestive disorders, and even infertility. By promoting natural healing mechanisms, acupuncture offers a holistic approach to improving overall well-being and managing a wide range of health issues.

In addition to standard acupuncture, electro-stimulation, otherwise known as e-stim, is used. Utilizing gentle electrical pulses, electrical stimulation (e-stim) is an effective method to alleviate pain and expedite recovery for specific injuries. Similar to acupuncture, e-stim precisely targets areas of the body, offering a painless and noninvasive approach to address muscle and joint pain. It proves particularly beneficial for conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, and chronic back pain. Furthermore, e-stim can aid in muscle retraining, making it a valuable tool for stroke recovery and rehabilitation.

There are many highly successful treatment plans available for a variety of pain disorders. If your pain is affecting your quality of life, if you are experiencing chronic muscle or joint pain, you should give acupuncture treatment a chance to help you.

Physicians' Choice Acupuncture providers Greg C. Bieg, L.Ac. & Dr. Joseph Bieg, L.Ac. are committed to providing exceptional care and are eager to serve you with the highest level of professionalism and compassion. DRUG-FREE CHRONIC PAIN RELIEF

  Release of opioid peptides

Opioids are naturally occurring chemicals in the brain that have an analgesic effect. The release of these opioids plays a significant role in the reduction of pain. There has been considerable evidence to support that acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system, releasing these chemicals.

·

Alteration in the secretion of neurotransmitters and neurohormones Acupuncture is said to activate the hypothalamus and pituitary gland and thereby alter secretion of these chemicals. These particular chemicals play a direct role in the sensation of pain as well as the activity of an organ or organs. Evidence has shown that acupuncture alters this secretion in a manner that reduces pain. Documentation has also shown that acupuncture positively affects immune functions in the body.

·

Stimulation of Nerves

The stimulation of nerves is a crucial mechanism by which acupuncture achieves pain relief. Nerve stimulation helps to enhance blood flow to the affected areas, improving oxygen and nutrient delivery while removing waste products. This process can reduce inflammation, alleviate muscle tension, and promote the body's natural healing response. By targeting specific nerve pathways, acupuncture offers a non-invasive and drug-free approach to pain management, allowing individuals to find relief and improve their overall well-being.

·

Promotion of Relaxation and Stress Reduction

Another significant benefit of acupuncture is its ability to promote relaxation and reduce stress levels. Acupuncture sessions create a calming and soothing environment, allowing individuals to unwind and release tension. This relaxation response can have a profound impact on pain perception and overall well-being. By reducing stress, acupuncture helps restore balance to the body and mind, enhancing the body's natural healing capacity.

WORK AND PERSONAL INJURIES

Acupuncture in the Workers’ Compensation System

Physicians, Claims Examiners and Case Managers must understand that acupuncture is applicable in a variety of soft tissue injuries and is advantageous to those injured workers suffering with chronic pain and restrictions in range of motion. Despite consulting some of the finest specialists, receiving conventional treatment modalities and medications for extended periods of time, a great number of injured workers continue to experience pain, preventing them from performing their job related duties and limiting their Activities of Daily Living.

Acupuncture has withstood the rigorous demands of the California Workers’ Compensation System, and has proven effective.

Therefore, acupuncture is not to be considered a "novelty" saved for the rare time a patient requests it. In order to provide the best care possible, which should be every Health Care Providers volition, the Treating Physician must inform their patients that acupuncture is available to them when all else fails.

Any injured worker struggling with chronic pain, who has not experienced lasting relief from the customary surface stimulation techniques such as ultrasound, electro muscle stimulation, manipulation, heat, etc. is an excellent candidate for a trial of acupuncture.

Acupuncture provides the precision and depth necessary to address unresolved muscle spasms, adhesions and the various complications associated with soft tissue injuries.

Personal Injuries

Acupuncture is a highly regarded therapy for personal injuries, offering a holistic approach to pain management and recovery. By targeting specific acupuncture points, it helps to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and improve circulation, promoting the body's natural healing process. This non-invasive treatment modality can be particularly beneficial in addressing musculoskeletal injuries, such as sprains, strains, sports-related trauma, and conditions triggered and aggravated by car accidents and slip and fall injuries. The one-on-one nature of acupuncture also addresses motor vehicle accident associated PTSD, fear of driving, depression, anxiety, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), among other conditions.

COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENTS

Physicians' Choice Acupuncture provides a comprehensive range of treatments, including acupuncture and herbal medicine, to support your overall well-being. Whether you're dealing with menstrual cramps, tension headaches, or migraines, our Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach offers effective relief from symptoms while prioritizing your general health and wellness. With our holistic approach, caring for your overall health becomes a seamless and straightforward process.

MUSCULOSKELETAL CONDITIONS

Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a comprehensive, whole-body approach for individuals dealing with arthritis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain conditions. These disorders often involve a combination of joint dysfunction, soft tissue restriction, nerve irritation, and systemic inflammatory patterns that can affect mobility, sleep, mood, and overall quality of life. Acupuncture and herbal medicine are commonly used to help regulate pain signaling, improve circulation to affected tissues, reduce inflammatory processes, and support the body’s natural repair mechanisms. Many musculoskeletal issues—such as bursitis, sports-related injuries, repetitive strain conditions, and acute or chronic neck and back pain—can benefit from an integrative TCM approach tailored to the specific cause, prognosis, and functional goals of the patient. Treatments are frequently combined with orthopedic-focused techniques such as Active Release Techniques (ART), myofascial release, cupping therapy, and therapeutic massage when medically appropriate, allowing care to address both neurological pain modulation and direct soft tissue dysfunction. This blended approach supports measurable functional improvements in range of motion, strength, and daily activity tolerance, rather than focusing on symptom relief alone.

TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES AND PTSD

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are commonly seen in Workers’ Compensation, Personal Injury, and Veteran cases, often resulting from motor vehicle accidents, falls, impact trauma, or blast exposure. Patients may experience persistent symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, cognitive fog, sleep disturbance, mood changes, sensory sensitivity, and post-traumatic stress patterns. Acupuncture can serve as a supportive therapy in neurological recovery by influencing the nervous system, helping regulate autonomic balance, improving circulation, and reducing neuroinflammatory responses associated with post-traumatic conditions. A specialized method known as scalp acupuncture targets functional areas of the brain through precise stimulation along the scalp, which may assist with cognitive clarity, headache reduction, vestibular symptoms, and emotional regulation. Because TBIs frequently coexist with stress-related disorders such as PTSD, acupuncture can also help modulate the body’s stress response, promoting improved sleep, reduced sympathetic overactivation, and better overall functional stability. At Physicians’ Choice Acupuncture, Inc., treatment is focused on nervous system regulation, pain control, and measurable functional improvement as part of an integrative rehabilitation approach.

EYES, EARS, THROAT, ALLERGIES AND MIGRAINE HEADACHES

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine offer effective supportive care for conditions affecting the eyes, ears, throat, and upper respiratory system, including allergies and migraine headaches. Imbalances in these regions can present as earaches, tinnitus, dizziness, sinus congestion, chronic sinusitis, sore throat, dry or irritated eyes, and recurrent headache patterns that interfere with concentration, sleep, and daily function. Acupuncture may help regulate inflammatory responses, improve local circulation, and influence neurological pathways involved in pain perception and sensory processing, while herbal and adjunctive therapies can further support immune modulation and mucosal health. By addressing sinus pressure, vestibular symptoms, ocular discomfort, and head pain, patients often experience not only symptom relief but also improved tolerance for other aspects of their care. For example, individuals undergoing physical therapy or rehabilitation may struggle to fully participate due to migraines, dizziness, or sinus-related head pressure; reducing these barriers can improve exercise compliance, recovery consistency, and overall prognosis. This integrative approach allows care to extend beyond isolated symptom control, supporting functional improvement and better outcomes across coexisting conditions.

COSMETIC AND FACIAL ACUPUNCTURE

In conjunction with full-body acupuncture treatments, facial acupuncture offers rejuvenating advantages by utilizing ultra-fine needles strategically placed on the face. This gentle and non-invasive procedure enhances the circulation of qi throughout the body, potentially stimulating collagen production and reducing the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles without the need for Botox injections. Moreover, facial acupuncture is employed to alleviate symptoms associated with Bell's palsy, providing a comprehensive approach to facial wellness.

GASTROINTESTINAL AND DIGESTIVE CONDITIONS

Our wide-range of Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments specifically designed to alleviate the symptoms and discomfort related to digestive issues such as IBS, acid reflux, GERD, gas, and indigestion. Acupuncture, as a distinct therapeutic modality, provides a unique and effective approach for addressing these concerns, either as a standalone treatment or in combination with Western medicine. By integrating acupuncture into your care plan, we strive to enhance your overall quality of life and provide relief from digestive challenges.

CUPPING, HERBS, AND MOXIBUSTION

Cupping therapy, both with and without herbal components, serves various purposes within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This technique can be utilized as a type of deep-tissue massage and effectively reduces pain, inflammation, and enhances blood circulation. By applying suction cups to the body, blood vessels expand into the skin. Additionally, moxibustion, involving the burning of dried mugwort or wormwood on specific points, is occasionally combined with cupping or acupuncture to promote the flow of vital energy throughout the body. Herbs are recommended for case-specific conditions.

CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP WITH FERTILITY?

Acupuncture has gained recognition as a valuable tool for individuals facing fertility challenges. By strategically placing fine needles, acupuncture helps prepare the uterine lining for implantation and can stimulate follicles to promote ovulation. Additionally, our acupuncture services aim to reduce stress, restore balance, and enhance overall well-being, creating an optimal environment for pregnancy. This holistic approach supports reproductive health and can be especially beneficial for those undergoing assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF or IUI. Acupuncture offers a complementary therapy that can optimize fertility outcomes by addressing both physical and emotional aspects of the journey toward conception.

WOMEN'S HEALTH

In addition to, and beyond fertility treatments, we also specialize in providing comprehensive care for overall women's health. Our experienced practitioners offer acupuncture as an effective and natural approach to address a wide range of women's health issues. Whether you are seeking relief from menstrual irregularities, hormonal imbalances, menopausal symptoms, PCOS, or reproductive disorders, our acupuncture treatments are tailored to meet your specific needs. With a focus on holistic healing, we strive to promote balance and overall well-being, empowering women to achieve optimal health in every stage of their lives.
